Say hello to Blackjack

Blackjack is a very popular game that was developed back in the 17th century. It is played in both land-based and online casinos across the world. After poker, Blackjack is the second most popular card game. The main objective of Blackjack is simple: Just make sure that your total hand value exceeds that of the dealer’s. But keep in mind that your hand shouldn’t go over 21. At the start of the game, you and the dealer have two cards each – both of your cards will be face up, but one of the dealer’s cards will be face down.

How does the deck of cards work?

Played with 52 cards, each card holds a specific value. The Ace, considered the highest card, is either counted as 1 or 11. All face cards like the King, Queen and Jack are worth 10 points. The other cards, like 2, 3, 4 etc. are worth the same as their face value.

The Different kind of hands

Blackjack has two types of hands – Soft and Hard. You’ll often find these in Blackjack books and on the games paytable. Here’s how they work:

  • Soft Blackjack Hands – This is any hand of two cards that holds an Ace. Some examples are A-2=13, A-3=14, A-4=15 and so on. It’s also good to know that a Soft hand cannot be busted by taking one hit.

  • Hard Blackjack Hands – This is when neither of your cards is an Ace or a hand where the Ace can only have a value of 1. It cannot be considered as 11. Examples of a hard hand are Q-6= 16 or A-4-9-4 = 18. The latter is a hard hand with an Ace – here it is counted as 1.

The Options in Blackjack

Hit – Going for ‘Hit’ is asking for another card

Stand – Choosing ‘Stand’ means you’ll stick with the cards you have, and your turn ends

Split – You’re allowed to split pairs. This separates your two matching cards to create two new hands.

Double Down – Once you are dealt your 2 initial cards, you can double your original bet for a single card. This eliminates your option to hit or stay.
