The Judgement of Paris in Greek mythology starts at the nuptials of Peleus and Thetis to which gods, goddesses as well as mortals were invited.  The only shunned one was the goddess Eris whose name means discord. As can be expected from one who bears such a name, she came uninvited bearing a golden apple inscribed with the word kallistei which means “to the fairest one”.  Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena all wanted the golden apple for themselves and Paris was named by Zeus to be the one to decide.  Paris was bribed by all three: Hera offering control over Asia and Europe, Athena offering fame, wisdom and glory in battle and Aphrodite offering the most beautiful woman in the world as his wife. This offer tilted the scales in Aphrodite’s favour and she was chosen by Paris as the Golden Goddess. However, Helen was already a married woman and the wife to King Menelaus of Sparta.  Her abduction by Paris, proved to be the starting point of one of the bloodiest events; the Trojan War.
